چکیده

Deploying lightweight tasks individually on grid resources would lead to a situation where communication overhead dominates the overall application processing time. The communication overhead can be reduced if we group the lightweight tasks at the meta-scheduler before the deployment. However, there is a necessity to limit the number of tasks in a group in order to utilise the resources and the interconnecting network in an optimal manner. In this paper, we propose policies and approaches to decide the granularity of a task group that obeys the task processing requirements and resourcenetwork utilisation constraints while satisfying the user’s QoS requirements. Experiments on bag-of-task applications reveal that the proposed policies and approaches lead towards an economical and efficient way of grid utilisation. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Construction of Hexahedral Block Topology and its Decomposition to Generate Initial Tetrahedral Grids for Aerodynamic Applications

Making an initial tetrahedral grid for complex geometry can be a tedious and time consuming task. This paper describes a novel procedure for generation of starting tetrahedral cells using hexahedral block topology. Hexahedral blocks are arranged around an aerodynamic body to form a flow domain. Each of the hexahedral blocks is then decomposed into six tetrahedral elements to obtain an initial t...

Multi-objective and Scalable Heuristic Algorithm for Workflow Task Scheduling in Utility Grids

To use services transparently in a distributed environment, the Utility Grids develop a cyber-infrastructure. The parameters of the Quality of Service such as the allocation-cost and makespan have to be dealt with in order to schedule workflow application tasks in the Utility Grids. Optimization of both target parameters above is a challenge in a distributed environment and may conflict one an...

Task Scheduling Using Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm with a Selection Guide and a Measure of Uniformity for Computational Grids

In this paper, we proposed an algorithm for solving the problem of task scheduling using particle swarm optimization algorithm, with changes in the Selection and removing the guide and also using the technique to get away from the bad, to move away from local extreme and diversity. Scheduling algorithms play an important role in grid computing, parallel tasks Scheduling and sending them to ...

On-Line, Non-clairvoyant Optimization of Workflow Activity Granularity on Grids

Controlling the granularity of workflow activities executed on widely distributed computing platforms such as grids is required to reduce the impact of task queuing and data transfer time. Most existing granularity control approaches assume extensive knowledge about the applications and resources (e.g. task duration on each resource), and that both the workload and available resources do not ch...

Robust Scheduling for Bag-of-Tasks Applications Through Task Replication

Scheduling independent tasks on heterogeneous environments, like Grids, is not trivial. To make a good scheduling plan on this kind of environments is usually needed prediction information like host speed, host load, task size and network load. This kind of information is not always available and is often dif f icult to obtain. In this paper we propose an approach that does not use any kind of ...
